Welcome

A website for gay men.. . .and lesbians. . and trans . . to share my writing and thoughts about our community and America.

I am sixty-six years old and been around the block a gazillion times; each trip was extraordinary. The philosophy of gay men in the 1970s who challenged everyone’s assumptions has shaped  my life.  Friends from those days and Michael my partner of 18 years are gone. Today I  strive to keep alive that spirit of freedom, love and sexual honesty through my friendships and my writing.

letter to my son

January 7, 2012 Dear Seth, I appreciate your thoughtfulness, and want to explain my response, “I’m not that gay” to your Christmas gift of the Lady Gaga book with a little more explanation and background. To give you a little history, my brother John always called me a sissy, and I never was an athlete [...]

new year resolution

Anyone who’s heard of Jim Hormel can’t help but idolize him.  Knowing him for almost thirty years I do not in part because that’s the last thing he wants and more importantly Jim’s commitment to honestly and equality insists that we emulate him.   As he says in his memoir Fit to Stand “Isn’t the meaning [...]

end of year

This year was never dull as I age actively.  My first priority was writing; my second was real estate.  I came to novel writing late, so I am just beginning to appreciate all the work that writing one entails.    I couldn’t ask for better editors.  Michael inspires me,  and Wayne forces me to write like [...]

death of a pioneer

Barbara Grier the pioneer publisher of lesbian books died November 17 in Tallahassee. Her death merited a substantial obituary in the Times. Her lesbian romance novels provided ideals and sustenance to countless lesbians across the country. Her “Lesbian Nuns Breaking Silence,” a nonfiction work based on interviews with 50 former and active nuns had [...]

obama for president

The last three years have not been what any of us wanted.  He started with Bush’s ponderous debt and deregulation. Then banks hoarded money instead of investing in improving the economy, and the Republicans have stifled attempts to improve it.  Despite that the President got health care reform legislation into law and ended Don’t Ask [...]

park known for sex

Park Known for Sex     Those words in the Times got my immediate attention. Foolish me, I thought those days were long gone.  The story gets worse.  Not only were men arrested in the park’s men’s room, but the police department thought they were still in 1955 and published their mug shots in the local paper [...]

occupy wall street

Every day I am reassured that my America is on the move.  The Occupy protest is growing and gaining momentum. Every thirty years, the span of a generation, unrest with the system surfaces and long simmering discontent and abuses can no longer be tolerated.  It’s usually the young who foment revolutions, and this one is [...]

age matters

This week I had lunch with a man I’ve known thirty years and played with a man I’ve known more than twenty years. Both are quite alive and active.  Andrew who once designed commercial interiors is now a painter, and Mike runs one of the most successful real estate companies in town. We talked about [...]

sex with al parker

Sex with Al Parker I didn’t know his name, but I’d seen photos of him in a porno magazine at the dirty book store. It was a jail scene.  A man in a tan highway patrol uniform insults him.  He makes him strip and get on the floor. Then Al turns on the highway [...]

the neighborhood

I moved to the Alamo Square neighborhood thirty years ago when no one dared entering the park at night.  Three years later I got mugged on my way home a neighbor’s. I was unconscious for four days after the doctors drilled a hole in my head to relieve blood massing on my brain.  If my [...]
